A Jonker Street institution since the 1980s, Jonker 88 is best known for Melaka's definitive cendol - but the shophouse counter also serves ice kacang, durian cendol in season, and Nyonya laksa from the adjacent stall.
A Jonker Street Institution
Jonker 88 has been at this shophouse address on Jalan Hang Jebat since the 1980s. The counter opens daily at 10am and draws queues well before noon. The cendol served here is Melaka’s most cited, and the shop has become a standard reference point for the heritage strip.
The setup is unfussy: a tiled shophouse front, open counter, plastic stools inside and spilling onto the five-foot way. Orders are taken quickly and prices are low across the board.
What to Order
Cendol is the signature: shaved ice, thick unsweetened coconut milk, jade-green pandan rice flour ribbons, slow-cooked red beans, and a pour of gula Melaka - the dark, smoky palm sugar that sets Melaka’s version apart. RM 3-6 depending on size.
Durian cendol arrives seasonally, made with fresh fruit rather than frozen. Worth ordering when the sign is out.
Ice kacang offers a lighter alternative: shaved ice with red beans, corn, and syrup for those who want the cold without the coconut richness.
The adjacent stall serves Nyonya laksa - tangy, coconut-rich broth, thin noodles, cucumber, and prawn - a full meal before or after the dessert counter.
Practical Details
Open most days from 9:30am, closing between 5:30pm (Wednesday) and 7:30pm (Thursday to Sunday). The shop closes before the Jonker Street night market begins. Cash only. Most items are under RM 8. Arriving before 11:30am gives the shortest queues and the best chance of seating inside.
