Award-winning roti canai stall at Ah Koon Kopitiam, run by a Malay family for decades, recognized for its distinctive square shape and made to order daily.
The Square Roti
Ah Koon Kopitiam houses a roti canai stall operated by the same Malay family for more than a decade, building on traditions established decades earlier. What sets their roti apart is its shape - a distinctive square rather than the typical round disc - and the fact that each order is flipped and cooked fresh to crispy, layered perfection. The roti arrives hot with a side of mild dhal curry and sambal.
Varieties and Ordering
The counter offers many roti variations beyond the standard Kosong: Boom (sugar), Planta (margarine), Bawang (onion), Cheese, and others. Specify “garing” for extra crispness if you prefer an audible crunch. The drink selection includes Teh Tarik, Milo, and Nescafe. Order at the roti counter first, then find seating inside the unair-conditioned kopitiam or along its more breezy corridor tables.
Timing
Open 7am to noon, Monday through Saturday, though the kitchen sometimes closes by 11:30am on busy mornings. Arrive early to guarantee selection. The morning crowd - a mix of construction workers, families, and regulars - creates genuine local atmosphere.
