Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Attraction Malacca Allow 1.5 hours

Built in 1645, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is Malaysia's oldest functioning temple and a masterwork of Chinese architectural design. Multiple prayer halls honour deities across Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist traditions.

History and Origins

Founded in 1645, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (青云亭, Temple of Green Cloud) is the oldest continuously operating temple in Malaysia. Chinese merchants and settlers built it to honor deities spanning Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist traditions, reflecting the religious pluralism that has long characterized Melaka’s Chinese community.

Architectural Layout

The temple complex comprises several interconnected prayer halls arranged according to feng shui principles. The main hall is dedicated to Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy. Additional chambers house deities associated with wealth, longevity, and family prosperity. Ancestral tablets line the walls, recording centuries of family histories. Ornate carvings, painted beams, and traditional Chinese roof ornaments demonstrate skilled craftsmanship throughout.

Religious and Cultural Context

Jalan Tukang Emas, the street where the temple stands, is known as “Harmony Street” because it sits within a uniquely diverse religious cluster, adjacent to both Kampung Kling Mosque and Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple. A traditional Chinese opera theatre sits across the road, hosting performances during festivals. This proximity of three major faiths in one neighbourhood reflects Melaka’s historical multicultural character.

Visiting the Temple

The temple remains an active place of worship, so visitors should dress respectfully and move quietly through prayer areas. Guided tours provide deeper context about the temple’s history and symbolism. Visitors often light incense or make small donations.
