Every Friday to Sunday, Jalan Hang Jebat transforms into a lively night market filled with food stalls, vintage shops, and street performers. It's where Melaka's Chinatown reveals its nocturnal character.
The Night Market
Jonker Street’s night market operates Friday through Sunday from 6pm to midnight, when vendors set up stalls along Jalan Hang Jebat and the surrounding lanes fill with locals and visitors. The scene is densely packed - expect shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, especially by 8pm - but the energy rewards the press. The street hums with haggling, sizzling woks, and live music from busking musicians scattered between the stalls.
What’s on Offer
The market splits into distinct zones. Food vendors occupy the ground level, grilling satay, frying oysters, and stacking mounds of mochi and durian puffs. The shops selling antiques, textiles, and vintage trinkets line the historic shophouses behind, many dating to the 17th century. Among them you’ll find 1970s record sleeves, hand-carved wooden figurines, and batik fabric alongside mass-produced souvenirs. Haggling is expected and part of the ritual.
Practical Notes
Arrive early (6pm-7pm) to explore without pushing through dense crowds. Public transport and Grab rides are saturated by 8pm, so plan your transport ahead. Wear comfortable shoes - you’ll cover considerable ground navigating the packed stalls. Most food vendors accept only cash, though some modern shops take QR payments or cards.
