Maritime Museum

Attraction Malacca Tue-Sun 09:00-17:30 Allow 1.5 hours

The Maritime Museum houses a full-scale replica of the Flor de la Mar, the legendary 16th-century Portuguese ship, and documents Melaka's role as a major port during the Age of Exploration.

The Flor de la Mar

The museum’s centerpiece is a full-scale wooden replica of the Flor de la Mar, which sank off Melaka’s coast in 1511 while carrying Portuguese nobleman Afonso de Albuquerque and the spoils of conquest. The 34-metre structure dominates the riverfront and can be explored floor by floor. Display cases show navigational instruments, maps, and salvaged artifacts, while mannequins in period dress depict sailors, captains, and merchants working aboard.

Three Floors of Maritime History

The museum spans three levels tracing the Melaka Strait’s strategic importance and the competing colonial powers who fought to control it. Lower galleries explore the spice trade and medieval sultanate era, when Melaka was a thriving Muslim port. Middle sections focus on Portuguese conquest and administration (1511-1641), Dutch rule (1641-1795), and the British period. Upper floors examine the ships themselves, showing how Portuguese carracks and galleons were built, armed, and sailed. Scale models and technical diagrams illustrate construction methods and navigation techniques.

Visiting Information

The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5:30pm, and is located on Jalan Merdeka near the river. The audio guide (available in English, Malay, and Mandarin) is recommended, though some exhibits have limited captions. The climb up the replica’s interior stairs is steep and narrow; visitors with mobility concerns should assess feasibility beforehand.
