Malaysia's second-largest zoo, in Ayer Keroh, houses more than 1,200 animals representing over 200 species, from Malayan tigers to reptiles, with a separate butterfly garden and night safari program.

Zoo Melaka occupies 57 acres in the forested reserve at Ayer Keroh, about 12 kilometres north of the Old Town. Established in 1963, it is Malaysia’s second-largest zoological park, housing more than 1,200 animals of over 200 species. The grounds slope gently and wind through shaded pathways, making it accessible and comfortable for long visits.

Collections

The zoo’s centrepiece is the Malayan Tiger Exhibit, which participates in regional breeding efforts to preserve the critically endangered subspecies. Large enclosures for primates, including gibbons and macaques, occupy a central zone. The Reptile House displays pythons, cobras, and monitor lizards. An aviary section includes flamingos, swans, and native birds. A separate Butterfly Garden houses dozens of species amid flowering plants. A Children’s Zoo allows supervised interaction with docile domestic and farm animals.

Night Safari and Mini Safari

The zoo operates guided night safaris on weekends, highlighting nocturnal animal behaviour and feeding patterns. A tram-like “Mini Safari” ride traverses enclosures where animals roam in semi-open conditions. Educational talks and scheduled feeding demonstrations occur throughout the day, explaining conservation, taxonomy, and habitat loss.

Visiting

Arrive early to avoid midday heat and crowds. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and use the shaded rest areas. Allow three to four hours for a thorough visit. The zoo offers dining and gift shops on-site. Friday and Saturday nights are best for the Night Safari program.
