Old Town Chicken Rice

Local Malacca Tue-Sun 08:00-19:00

A modest shophouse in Air Leleh serving impeccable chicken rice - choose roast or steamed chicken, then load up on the fragrant rice, braised eggs, and chili sauce fired with minced garlic and ginger. Midday rush clears quickly.

The Dish

The menu is straightforward: roast or steamed chicken, and that’s really the choice you need to make. The rice is fragrant and properly cooked, each grain distinct and carrying the fat from the stock. This alone sets the shop apart - getting rice right matters more than most realize.

The Sides

Braised eggs are soft and rich, the yolks barely set. Deep-fried chicken intestine has texture and reward. Chicken gizzard is tender, a cut often glossed over in lesser hands. The chili sauce is what elevates everything: minced garlic and ginger pound through it, a homemade punch that changes with each spoonful. Order extra on the side. Diners can specify preferred chicken parts, thigh and wings being the most forgiving cuts.

The Setting

No air conditioning. Ceiling fans move the air adequately. The shophouse is clean and basic, with good sightlines. Parking sits directly in front. Lunch hours, particularly weekdays, draw office workers and students from nearby schools, creating a consistent midday rush that clears surprisingly fast - service speed is genuinely quick.

Visiting Details

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 8am to 7pm. Located on Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho in Air Leleh. Go at quieter times (early morning, mid-afternoon) if you prefer a peaceful meal, or embrace the midday energy.
