A half-century-old stall on Jalan Tengkera serving Melaka's signature spicy mee goreng, made fiery with homemade chili paste and crowned with a runny fried egg. Arrive early for breakfast or return Monday through Wednesday after 8pm.
The Dish
Hassan’s mee goreng is built on a foundation of yellow noodles tossed with homemade chili paste, bean sprouts, fresh cucumber, and soy sauce. The heat comes from a sambal that has no apologies, and the dish’s local nickname “Mee Bodo” (foolish noodles) plays on the courage required to eat it. Each plate is crowned with a fried egg, cooked sunny-side up in the same sambal oil, the yolk often still runny.
How It Works
Seat yourself first - there’s no hostess. The noodles arrive at your table without ordering, already prepared at the kitchen. Your only decision is the egg station: a queue at one end where you customize your egg cooked level, choose your sambal amount, and add extra cucumber if desired. Someone circulates for drink orders. The system moves surprisingly fast despite the casual setup.
The Flavors
The heat is memorable and sustained, lingering long after the plate clears. Soy sauce and white vinegar sit on the table for those wanting to adjust the balance. The texture contrast between the slightly crisp noodles, soft sprouts, and cold cucumber creates complexity within such a simple dish. It’s spicy food that doesn’t mask poor ingredients, which is why this stall has held its reputation for fifty years.
Timing and Logistics
Open 7:30am to 10:45am daily, plus Monday through Wednesday evenings 8pm to 10pm. Arrive early to avoid queues, especially weekends. The stall is packed during breakfast rush and weekend lunches.
