Express Bus
The most popular option. Direct from KL's TBS to Melaka Sentral every 30 minutes. Mayang Sari and KKKL are the most reliable operators.
From the moment you decide to come, to the moment you wave down a trishaw. Everything we know about moving through Melaka.
It's a two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, about three hours by express bus, and now a direct 55-minute Scoot flight from Singapore. Here's what works best.
The most popular option. Direct from KL's TBS to Melaka Sentral every 30 minutes. Mayang Sari and KKKL are the most reliable operators.
The most flexible. PLUS Expressway from KL: RM 12.87–16.40 depending on entry point, RM 20.34 from JB. Skip the Friday-evening exodus: leave by 15:00 or after 21:00.
Driving guide →Scoot flies direct to Melaka International Airport (MKZ) from Singapore five times a week. For wider connections, KLIA is 130 km north (90 min by car) and Changi is 250 km south (under 3 h). Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia cover both hubs.
Organized day trips from KL and Singapore with transport, guide, and key sights bundled. Jonker Walk, A Famosa, and the heritage core in one trip without any logistics.
No direct rail to Melaka. Take ETS to Pulau Sebang/Tampin (38 km from heritage core), then a Grab or taxi (~RM 50, 35 min). Departs KL Sentral; also works from JB and cities on the Gemas line.
Melaka Gateway Cruise Terminal in Klebang accepts port calls from MSC, Genting Dream, and regional lines. The terminal is 10 km from the heritage core; Grab or taxi to Dutch Square (~RM 30, 20 min).
Sort the small stuff in advance and arrive ready. All affiliate links, same prices, our cut helps keep the lights on.
If you're driving via PLUS Expressway, here's what you'll pay in Class 1 (cars).

TnG/Smart Tag preferred; there are no cash lanes on PLUS.
The heritage core is 1.2 km across, entirely walkable, and partially car-free on weekends. Here are the realistic ways to move beyond that.
The UNESCO core fits in a 15-minute walking radius. Most sights, including Stadthuys, Christ Church, A Famosa, and Jonker Walk, sit within a triangle you can cross in 12 minutes. Wear good shoes; the streets are uneven.
Car-free streets: Jalan Istana, Jalan Mahkamah, Jalan Gereja, Lorong Gereja, Jalan Laksamana, and parts of Jalan Tun Khalil Yaakob and Jalan Merdeka.
Melaka is flatter and more bike-friendly than people expect. There's a dedicated path along the river, the heritage core is compact enough to enjoy at cycle pace, and a half-dozen shops near Jonker rent for the day at sensible prices.
Full guide →Most weekenders arrive in Melaka by car. Parking is the choke point: the heritage core is car-free on weekend evenings, on-street bays require a coupon or the Melaka Smart Parking app, and traffic builds fast on Friday afternoons.
Full guide →The fluorescent scooters parked along the riverside are Beam, Malaysia's biggest dockless e-scooter network. Convenient for last-mile, but they live inside specific zones and the rules matter.
Full guide →Both apps work in Melaka, but they're not interchangeable. Grab is more reliable inside the heritage core; AirAsia Ride is often cheaper for longer trips and getting out to Ayer Keroh. Here's how to choose.
Full guide →Three ways to explore the Melaka River - a 45-minute heritage cruise, a hop-on hop-off service at 14 piers, or a water taxi to beat the traffic. All operated by the official Melaka River Cruise.
Full guide →The 19-route public bus, replacement for Panorama Melaka (launched Oct 2024). Cleaner buses, contactless TnG payment.
Full bus guide →Melaka's demand-responsive transit: request a minivan via app, get a shared ride within 15 minutes. Active in the western districts.
Full DRT guide →The flower-and-LED-bedecked trishaw is iconic Melaka. Touristy, kitschy, fun. Negotiate first; standard is RM 20 for a 30-minute loop, RM 40 for an hour.
Trishaw guide →You'll catch Jonker Walk's opening, dinner crowds will be reasonable, and Saturday morning at the heritage core is yours before the day-trippers from KL roll in around 11:00.
Midday (11:00 to 15:00) is genuinely brutal. Save outdoor sights for early morning or late afternoon. Use the middle of the day for museums, kopitiams, and a long lunch.
QR payments are the daily default now - TnG eWallet and Grab Pay are accepted at hawker stalls, shops, and BAS.MY buses. Keep a physical TnG card or credit card for parking lots and PLUS highway tolls, which still prefer card-tap over QR.
Weekly field notes from inside the heritage zone, covering new openings, seasonal eats, and things worth the trip.
