Grab, AirAsia Ride
and which to use.

Both apps work in Melaka, but they’re not interchangeable. Grab is more reliable inside the heritage core; AirAsia Ride is often cheaper for longer trips and getting out to Ayer Keroh. Here’s how to choose.

Which app to install

If you’re only going to install one, install Grab, which has wider driver coverage in Melaka, especially in the heritage core and at night. If you’re planning to go out to Ayer Keroh (zoo, A Famosa, Mini Malaysia), AirAsia Ride is consistently 15–25% cheaper for that route. Many regular visitors run both.

Editor’s note

Neither app accepts foreign credit cards as smoothly as we’d like. If your card is rejected on payment, switch to “cash” in the ride options and pay the driver directly; universally accepted.

First-time setup

  1. Install both apps before you arrive

Grab on iOS/Android · AirAsia Ride is inside the AirAsia MOVE app. Sign in with a phone number that can receive SMS in Malaysia (or a Malaysian number).

  2. Add a payment method

Local debit cards work best. International cards often fail; fall back to cash if so. You can also link Touch’n Go eWallet to either app.

  3. Pin a pickup point

Heritage-core pickup pins can be unreliable; drivers can’t always get in past the car-free barriers. Walk to the nearest main road if your driver says they can’t reach you.

When neither app is the answer

Inside the heritage core itself, walking is faster than waiting for any ride. A trip from the Stadthuys to A Famosa is 5 minutes on foot, and the same trip by Grab will take 8–12 minutes once you factor in pickup wait and the car-free detours.

For trips to Mahkota Parade and the riverside, the river taxi is often more pleasant and just as fast.
