This past month in Melaka

We ranked five sunset spots in Melaka, from easy riverfront views to quieter places that reward a little effort. Use it when the sky clears after rain. Full story

What to do in May

May runs hot, bright, and sticky. Start early, rest after lunch, then head out again after 5pm. Short storms can roll in late, so carry a small umbrella and wear shoes that dry fast.

Jonker Walk still works best on Friday to Sunday nights, but go before 7pm if you hate the crush. On weekday mornings, walk from Stadthuys through Heeren Street and cross to Kampung Morten. You get shade, old facades, and enough quiet to hear the city breathe.

This is cendol weather. Order one after lunch, then chase it with iced nutmeg juice or coconut water. Save satay celup and asam pedas for dinner, when the heat drops and your appetite returns.

May also gives you strong sunsets when the sky stays clear after rain. Head to the Portuguese Settlement for seafood and sea air, or take the river walk from Kampung Hulu toward the old warehouses. Both feel best in the last hour of light.
