Teo Seng Teochew Porridge

breakfast Malacca Tue-Sun 10:30-19:00

Operating since the 1950s, Teo Seng serves Teochew-style porridge with plain rice as a base, accompanied by a rotating display of stir-fried meats, seafood, and vegetables.

Teochew Comfort Food

Teo Seng has operated since the 1950s, serving a culinary tradition that originated in Teochew, a Chinese coastal region known for subtle seasoning and clean flavors. The core offering is simple: a steaming bowl of plain white porridge (or rice, if preferred) paired with a choice from the restaurant’s rotating display of cooked dishes - stir-fried chicken, steamed fish, braised meats, vegetable preparations, and preserved vegetables.

The ordering process is tactile and direct. Point to the dishes you want, specify porridge or rice as your base, and the server assembles your meal. The flavors are deliberately mild - this is home cooking, meant for comfort and sustained appetite rather than bold seasoning.

The Dining Experience

The restaurant operates without air conditioning but maintains comfort with ceiling fans. Wooden tables fill with a mix of locals - workers, retirees, families - during lunch peaks. Payment is cash or digital wallet (TnG eWallet) after eating. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:30am to 7pm. Closed Mondays and lunar calendar holidays (1st, 2nd, 15th).
