What is Kumpool?
Kumpool is Melaka’s demand-responsive transit (DRT) service - also known as Bus-on-Demand. Unlike a fixed bus route, there are no set stops and no published timetable. You open the app, enter your pickup and dropoff points, and a shared minivan is dispatched to collect you and other nearby passengers heading in the same direction.
It is run by a government-linked operator, so the fares are subsidised. The base fare starts at RM 1, making it significantly cheaper than Grab for rides within the coverage zone.
There is no way to hail a Kumpool vehicle on the street or book by phone. You must use the Kumpool app (iOS and Android). Download it before you need it - app store downloads can be slow on mobile data.
Coverage zones
Kumpool operates within approximately a 7 km radius of the heritage core, covering western Melaka districts including areas around Ayer Keroh, Cheng, and Bukit Baru that are not well-served by BAS.MY routes.
It does not operate within the inner heritage core itself (the pedestrianised area around Jonker Street and Dutch Square). For the heritage core and Bandar Hilir, walking, Grab, or Beam e-scooters are better options.
How to book
Download the Kumpool app
Search “Kumpool” on the App Store or Google Play. Registration requires a Malaysian or international mobile number for SMS verification.
Set your pickup and dropoff
Enter both points on the map. The app will show you an estimated fare and wait time before you confirm.
Confirm and wait
Once confirmed, a vehicle will be dispatched. Track it on the map. Average wait is 10-20 minutes depending on how many vehicles are active in your zone.
Board when the driver arrives
The app shows the driver’s name, vehicle plate, and photo. Pay in-app or via Touch’n Go - no cash required.
Fares
The RM 1 minimum covers short trips within the same zone. For longer rides across zones, fares increase by distance but remain subsidised - typically RM 2-4 for a cross-district ride that would cost RM 15-20 in a Grab.
Because it is a shared service, your route may make additional stops to pick up or drop off other passengers. Factor in an extra 10-15 minutes versus a direct Grab.
When to use Kumpool vs alternatives
- Use Kumpool for: Getting to or from outer suburbs (Ayer Keroh, Cheng, Bukit Baru) where Grab quotes RM 20+ and BAS.MY frequency is low.
- Use Grab instead: When you need a direct, point-to-point ride with a guaranteed pickup time and no shared detours.
- Use BAS.MY instead: If MK05 (Melaka Sentral to Ayer Keroh) covers your destination - it runs the same corridor for RM 1 with no app needed.
- Skip both at night: Neither Kumpool nor BAS.MY runs reliably after 22:00. Use Grab after dark.
